Do you think it is really OK to crate a dog.?

My co-worker just bought a black lab puppy. They crate him when they leave for work in the AM, they come home at lunch let him out, & back in the crate again. He is out of the creat from 5 to 10 during week days & that is it . They feel bad but they don't know what else to do.
