I want to dye my dark dark brown hair a burgundy-red color. should i bleach it lightly first?

if so, what brand of bleach would be mild enough, and what level of peroxide? mind you, i just want it to be a light brown, not an orangish blonde. just light enough to dye it with the burgundy and actually have it turn it out burgundy.
